About Kevin Cotter
I am proud to be a life-long resident of the 99th District. I was born and raised in Isabella County and graduated from Shepherd High School in 1995. I received a bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Business Administration from Central Michigan University in 1999, followed by a Master of Science in Administration from CMU in 2001. While working toward my Masters degree, I worked for Ryder Integrated Logistics for two years. I was assigned to work on-sight at General Motor’s Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant. During this time I coordinated in-bound transportation of automotive parts from around the world. I especially enjoyed spending time on the floor of the assembly plant floor observing processes and finding new ways to operate more efficiently. I then returned to Mt. Pleasant where I worked for a local trucking company in the areas of Human Resources and Safety.
After earning valuable experience in the business world, I made the decision to go to law school and graduated from Thomas M. Cooley Law School with a Juris Doctorate degree in 2006. While at Cooley Law School I was on the Dean’s List in multiple terms and was also an Associate Editor of the Thomas M. Cooley Journal of Practical and Clinical Law. After taking the Bar Exam, I had over three months to wait for the results. I spent this time working as a substitute high school teacher and working in a factory.
After passing the Bar Exam in 2006 I witnessed the Michigan economy decline fast. While jobs for new attorneys were available in larger cities, it was very important to my wife Jennifer and I to remain in the Mt. Pleasant area. In November of 2006 I opened the Law Office of Kevin M. Cotter, PLLC in downtown Mt. Pleasant. During this time I was also a professor at Mid-Michigan Community College. Later in 2007, I merged my practice with J. David Kerr and the Kerr Law Firm, PLLC, also in downtown Mt. Pleasant. Our firm focuses in the areas of Estate Planning, Business Planning and Elder Law. I am also certified by the Department of Veterans Affairs to represent veterans seeking benefits they deserve for the great sacrifices they have made for our country.
I am a member of the Michigan Bar Association, and section member of the Elder Law & Disability Rights, and the Probate and Estate Planning sections of the State Bar of Michigan. I am the current Vice President of the Isabella County Bar Association, Member of the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys, and member and past Vice President and Programming Director of the Michigan Forum of Estate Planners.
I enjoy spending time in Michigan’s outdoors whenever possible. I also enjoy golfing, snowmobiling, hunting, boating and spending time with my wife Jennifer and family.
